Her father, a Syrian Jew, was born in Aleppo, Syria, raised in Brazil, and subsequently emigrated to the United States; Abdul's mother, also Jewish, is originally from Saint Boniface, Manitoba (now part of Winnipeg), and Abdul derives Canadian citizenship through her.
